ABOUT THE ARTIST

Susan Kemp

Susan Kemp with her portrait of Prof. Andrew Crouch, ex Vice-Chancellor and Principal of Sal Plaatje University in Kimberley, South Africa.

…is a versatile artist and art tutor who does fine art, book illustration, cartoons, and portraits. Her mediums are oils, acrylics, inks, pen, pencil, charcoal, and pastels. She loves sculpting in clay. She paints subjects ranging from realistic landscapes and portraits to dreamscapes, imaginary scenes and abstracts.

She grew up in the Tsitsikamma, the southern coastal area of South Africa, and now lives in the village of Storms River in the area.

She has a BA degree in language studies, a commercial art diploma, and took classes in painting (watercolours and acrylics) and commercial art. The bigger part of her growth and learning as an artist, however, comes from invaluable constructive feedback from fellow-artists, lots of portrait work, constant experimenting, and teaching art to adults and children

Portraits (adults, children and pets) are done from life or from photographs, and wildlife from photographs in conjunction with photographers – all in acrylics, pastels, pencil, pen or charcoal.

Sculpture includes ceramics, papier maché, wood, soapstone and mixed media.
